How to Get More Driving Pupils: 12 Strategies That Actually Work in 2025
"How do I get more driving pupils?" is the question every ADI asks. I've tested every strategy going on my own school. Here are the 12 that actually work in 2025 — ranked by impact.
1. Optimise your Google Business Profile (the #1 source of pupils)
If you do nothing else on this list, do this. Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest source of local pupils. When someone searches "driving lessons near me", the businesses in the map pack get the calls.
Make sure you: claim your listing, write a keyword-optimised description, add all your services and pricing, upload photos, set up Q&A, and get reviews from happy pupils. This alone can fill your diary.

2. Rank on Google for "driving lessons [your area]"
Local SEO is how you get found by pupils who don't know you yet. Create pages for each area you cover, write blog posts about local test routes, and get listed in local directories. It takes a few months to kick in, but it compounds — I still get pupils from blog posts I wrote years ago.
The Local SEO Foundation handles the setup, or the SEO Retainer keeps it growing month after month.
3. Run Meta ads (Facebook & Instagram)
Meta ads are the fastest way to fill a diary. Target 17–25 year olds (and their parents) in your postcode area, with a clear offer and a simple booking flow. I run these for my own school — a £10–£20/day budget consistently sends me enquiries.
The Meta Ads Setup gets a full campaign built for £199, or the Ads Management retainer has me run it for you.
4. Build a website that actually converts
A pretty website that doesn't convert is a waste of money. Your site needs: a clear headline, your area, your prices, social proof (reviews), and a dead-simple way to book. No clutter, no friction.
Every website I build is designed around what actually makes a pupil pick up the phone — because I'm an ADI and I know what converts.
5. Collect and showcase Google reviews
Reviews are social proof that converts. Ask every happy pupil for a review on your Google Business Profile. Display them on your website. A 5-star rating with 30 reviews will out-convert any ad.
6. Offer a first-lesson discount (strategically)
As an independent, you can set your own prices — and discount them to attract pupils when you want. A £5 discount on the first lesson lowers the barrier to entry, gets them in the car, and most stay full-price afterwards. Franchises can't do this.
7. Build a referral system
Every pupil who passes their test knows 3–4 people about to start learning. Offer a referral discount (e.g. £10 off for both) and turn every pass into 2–3 new pupils. This is free marketing that compounds.
8. Write local content
Blog posts about your local test centre, test routes, pass rates and local driving tips rank on Google and build trust. "How to pass your driving test in [your town]" is gold. This is what the SEO Retainer does — two optimised posts a month.
9. Get listed in local directories
Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Thomson Local and 30+ others. It's not glamorous, but it helps your Google ranking and sends the occasional direct enquiry. The Local SEO Foundation submits you to all of them.
10. Use WhatsApp for bookings
Young pupils don't want to call you. They want to message. Make WhatsApp booking dead simple — a button on your website, a number on your Google profile. You'll book more pupils by removing the phone-call friction.
11. Partner with local schools and colleges
Sixth forms, colleges and universities are full of your target market. Offer a discount code for students, leave cards on notice boards, or sponsor a school event. Old-school, but it works.
12. Retarget your website visitors
Most people who visit your website don't book on the first visit. A simple Meta retargeting ad keeps you in front of them for £2–£3/day. When they're ready to book, you're the one they remember.
The strategy that beats all of them
Here's the truth: no single strategy on this list will fill your diary on its own. The instructors with full diaries do all of them — a converting website, a ranking Google profile, running ads, collecting reviews, writing content, and building referrals.
That's exactly what the Full Marketing Retainer does — SEO content, ads management and Google Business Profile updates, all handled for £199/month. Or go all-in with the Launch Package and get everything set up at once.
Stop paying a franchise to (not) send you pupils
If you're still with a franchise, remember: they're supposed to be doing all of this for you — and many weeks they fail to send any pupils at all. You can do it yourself, better, for a fraction of the £250/week fee. Run the numbers and see.
