The Franchise Trap

Promised £60,000. Delivered £20,000.
The franchise trap, exposed.

RED, AA and BSM charge £200–£250+ every week, hit you with hidden penalties, lock you into contracts with £5,000+ exit bills — and still leave you with an empty diary. I read the contracts. Here are the 6 traps buried in the small print, and exactly how to escape them.

ADI · Left the franchise trap

“I was paying £250 a week for a franchise that often sent me no pupils at all. I left, built my own school, and paid off my car in 6 months. Now Google sends me more pupils than the franchise ever did — and I keep every penny.”

The £60k Lie

Promised £60,000. Delivered £20,000.

National franchises market potential earnings of £60,000+ a year. After franchise fees, hidden penalties and empty-diary weeks, most instructors take home £18,000–£22,000. Here's where the other £40,000 goes.

£13,000 a year in franchise fees. £500 joining fees. £25 pupil-rejection charges. £100 missed-service penalties. £5,000+ early-termination bills. Empty diaries you still pay for. This is the franchise trap.

The 6 Franchise Traps

Every restrictive clause. Every hidden fee. Exposed.

I read the contracts. Here are the 6 traps buried in the small print — and how each one drains your income. Read the full deep dive →

01

The "Double-Dipping" Referral Fees

You already pay £250/week for the franchise — the whole point of which is pupil supply. Yet many franchises charge an additional referral fee for every pupil they introduce. Double-dipping that destroys your margins.

02

The "Guaranteed Pupils" Illusion

Contracts explicitly state they do not guarantee any minimum pupils, lessons, or geographic exclusivity. Yet the weekly fee must be paid in full — even when your diary is empty for weeks.

03

The Iron-Clad Financial Lock-In

12–24 month minimum terms with automatic renewal. Leave early and you're liable for the entire remaining balance — demands of £5,847+ are real. Plus an instant £75 termination admin fee.

04

The Endless Hidden Penalties

£12 late payment fees. £10/week direct debit failure penalties. £25 admin fees for your own parking tickets. £100 for missing a service. £25 for rejecting a pupil. The charges never stop.

05

The Vehicle Burden

You source, finance, insure and maintain the car. You pay for the dual controls. Then the franchise forces you to wrap it in their branding. All the cost, none of the ownership.

06

Complete Loss of Brand Identity

Forbidden from using your own name. Banned from passing referrals to local peers. Restricted from complaining online. When you leave, you walk away with nothing — no brand, no website, no pupil list.

Over 5 years, you'll hand over £50,000–£65,000 to a franchise — and own nothing at the end. No brand. No website. No pupil list that's yours. Read the full contract breakdown →

Why the gap grows every year: Your franchise fee stays at £220/week forever — it never drops, never pays off, never builds equity. As an independent, your insurance drops after Year 1 with no claims, drops again in Year 3, and your car finance pays off in Year 4 — after that, that money stays in your pocket as pure profit.

Estimates based on 46 working weeks/year. Independent costs include car finance, fuel (~£3.50/lesson), insurance (reducing with no-claims), tax and a marketing retainer. Franchise costs include the weekly fee, joining fee and the same fuel/insurance — no equity, ever. Your real numbers will vary, but the gap only grows.

The Exit Plan

How to leave your franchise — step by step.

01

Check your contract

Read your franchise agreement. Note your notice period (usually 4–8 weeks) and who owns the pupils you've been teaching.

02

Build your presence

Get your website, Google Business Profile and branding ready before you leave. No income gap.

03

Sort your car

Finance your own car, fit dual controls, get it wrapped in your branding. I paid mine off in 6 months.

04

Let Google fill your diary

Switch on your ads, rank locally, collect reviews. Pupils come to you — not a franchise car in a sea of identical cars.

Questions

Franchise exit questions, answered.

The honest answers from an ADI who's done it.

How much does a RED driving instructor franchise cost?

RED charges around £220 per week plus a £500 joining fee. That's £11,400 a year in franchise fees alone, before you've earned a penny — and many weeks they fail to send enough pupils to cover it.

How much does an AA driving instructor franchise cost?

AA charges around £250 per week plus a £500 joining fee. That's £13,000 a year in franchise fees — more than the Independent Instructor Launch Package costs in total.

Can I leave my driving instructor franchise early?

Most franchises require 4–8 weeks written notice. Check your contract for the exact notice period and pupil ownership clauses. Build your independent presence before you leave so there's no income gap.

Will I lose my pupils if I leave my franchise?

Pupils the franchise sent you are technically theirs, but pupils you found yourself are yours. The key is to build your own Google presence and ads before you leave, so you're not relying on the franchise's pupils at all.

Is it cheaper to be an independent driving instructor?

Yes — significantly. Independent running costs (car, fuel, insurance, marketing) are around £88–£113/week, compared to £200–£250+/week in franchise fees alone. Most instructors save £10,000+ a year going independent.
