How to Leave RED Driving School Franchise (Without Losing Your Pupils)

Leaving RED Driving School is one of the best decisions I ever made — but it needs to be done properly. Here's exactly how to leave a RED franchise without losing your pupils, your income, or your mind.

Step 1: Read your RED franchise contract

Before you do anything else, dig out your franchise agreement. You need to know three things:

• Notice period: RED typically requires 4–8 weeks written notice. Check yours.
• Pupil ownership: Most RED contracts state that pupils introduced by RED remain RED pupils. Pupils you found yourself are usually yours.
• Car arrangements: If you're in a RED car, you'll need to hand it back. If it's your own car with RED livery, you'll need to de-brand it.

Don't skip this step. Breaching your contract can cost you more than the franchise fee you're trying to escape.

Step 2: Build your independent presence before you leave

The biggest mistake instructors make is leaving RED first, then trying to figure out marketing. By the time your website is live and your Google Business Profile is ranking, you've had weeks with no income.

Instead, build everything while you're still earning. Use your notice period to:

Step 4: Keep your pupils (legally)

Here's the honest truth about pupils when you leave RED:

• Pupils RED sent you: These are technically RED's. You can't actively poach them, but if a pupil chooses to follow you to your new school, that's their decision.
• Pupils you found yourself: These are yours. Friends, family, referrals, anyone you found through your own efforts — they come with you.
• Future pupils: Once you're independent, every pupil you get from Google, ads or referrals is 100% yours.

The key is to have your own pipeline ready before you leave, so you're not relying on RED's pupils at all.

Step 5: Replace RED's pupil pipeline with Google

This is the bit that scares instructors most — but it's actually straightforward. RED gets its pupils from Google and Meta ads. You can do exactly the same thing, for yourself.

1. Google Business Profile: Get this set up and optimised. It's the single biggest source of local pupils.
2. Local SEO: Rank for "driving lessons [your area]". This takes a few weeks but compounds over time.
3. Meta ads: A £10–£20/day Facebook and Instagram ad budget will start sending you enquiries immediately.
4. Your website: A simple, fast site that converts visitors into bookings.
