Step-by-Step: Leaving a Franchise and Starting Your Own School
Leaving a franchise is the best move most instructors make, but it needs doing properly. I left a national franchise, built my own school, and now earn more working fewer hours. Here's the exact step-by-step I wish I'd had.
Week 1: Read your contract, not the sales pitch

Week 1-2: Build your presence before you leave
The biggest mistake is leaving first, then scrambling for marketing. Build while you're still paid. Get your website live (7 days), claim your Google Business Profile, and start local SEO. By the time you serve notice, you're already visible.
Week 2-3: Sort the car
If you're in a franchise car, you'll hand it back. Finance your own, fit dual controls (£300-£400), and wrap it in YOUR branding, not theirs. I paid mine off in six months because I wasn't carrying their markup. A branding pack gives you the identity for £199.
Week 3-4: Set up your pipeline
